Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI). Many people with HPV don't develop any symptoms but can still infect others through sexual contact. Symptoms may include warts on the genitals or surrounding skin.

There's no cure for the virus and warts may go away on their own. Treatment focuses on removing the warts. A vaccine that prevents the HPV strains most likely to cause genital warts and cervical cancer is recommended for boys and girls.

FAST FACTS:-

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a type of virus that affects your skin. Infections of the vaginal, penis, and anus are referred to as genital HPV infections. HPV infections in the genital area are spread by genital skin-to-skin contact, including sex without the use of a condom, and can be passed from one person to another even if no symptoms are present.

HPV infections have a wide range of symptoms and effects. The majority of strains are harmless, but some can cause genital warts and others can lead to cancer. Condoms for both men and women, dental dams, and latex gloves can all help to prevent genital HPV infection.

Regular cervical screenings (smear tests) will help detect abnormal cells on the cervix caused by HPV, which can lead to cancer, when they are available.
